Da Terra Meiga is translated into English as “from the witches’ land.” The land to which this name refers is Galicia, located in the northwest of Spain. It is from there that the project Da Terra Meiga stems. Ruben Cortiñas and Laura Cruz, who spent their childhood in this rich Ibero-Celtic region, collaborate to bring a fresh set of both traditional and original songs in the native language of Galicia to new audiences in the United States. Currently based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the band blends Galician-style folk with Afro-Cuban rhythms, didgeridoo instrumentation, and other world fusion styles with the help of Albuquerque musicians Kyle Molina, Rev Tsolwizar, and Ben Russert. Da Terra Meiga provides a flamboyant stage experience, combining live music with traditional Galician ritual and folk fusion bellydance by dancers Jewels and Kira Gone. A marriage of ancient songs and folklore with modern stage performance, Da Terra Meiga is a one-of-a-kind troupe poised to lighten the heart and bewitch the senses.
